Lesson Description

Whether you call them deceptive designs, dark patterns or manipulative interfaces, regulators are examining closely the use of these techniques to extract more money or consent or compliance from customers. This course runs through a sample game, called MouseTrax, and will teach you about different types of deceptive designs. In the end, you’ll learn the spectrum from legimate information or persuasion to illegitimate manipulation and coercion.

Learning Areas

  • What constitutes a manipulative interface
  • How to avoid manipulative interfaces
  • Three asymmetries: time, information, and power that contribute to manipulative designs

Lesson Objectives

Upon completion of this course, students shoud be able to state the common factors that contribute to manipulative interfaces. They should also be able to avoid manipulation and coercion in their own designs.

This lesson will prepare designers and developers to create interfaces purposefully designed not to manipulate users.
